Growing Our Own Food

Hi everyone!

I just spent time in the garden, and today I harvested eggplant, broccoli, and kale! I’m so excited.

We have been harvesting eggplant since June of last year, and the two plants are still going strong.

Disclaimer: We live in Southern California. Our growing season never ends. We’ve had to learn which vegetables grow best when, but we can always be growing something.

Also, we have a good-sized backyard. Plenty of room for a couple of beds and areas for pots.

I’m not a professional when it comes to gardening, but I have learned a few things.

First, it’s constant learning for me. It’s also constant attempts at trying different things. For example, I have learned that bok choy grows spectacularly when it’s cooler, and not well at all once it begins getting warmer. So I grow it in January.

I’ve also learned that one doesn’t need a spacious yard to grow food. A simple patio or balcony can do. If that’s you, Google your area and what you may be able to grow in a pot. You may be surprised!

I’ve also learned that gardening and growing your own food is so much fun. I absolutely love my garden time.

Growing your own food is a plus not only for you but for our whole food system. It’s part of my activism.

And it’s so much fun.

Give it a try this season. And if you already grow your own food, please let me know and tell me your favorite vegetables to grow.

And tips are always appreciated!

Go vegan. Vote. Be kind.
