The lack of human empathy and kindness from some national politicians is awful.
While politicians are slamming LA and firefighting efforts, even the fire chief, and offering no support, thousands of others are stepping forward to help those suffering.
I won’t repeat what politicians have said in attacking Los Angeles leadership, California leadership, the people of Los Angeles, and any community of people they don’t like.
It’s not difficult to be kind and offer a helping hand when thousands have lost everything.
It is difficult for me to understand how good people vote for politicians who are so ugly when others are suffering. These politicians show nothing at all to support people in awful situations.
I’m unsurprised, as I have heard other awfulness from these people.
I want them to stop talking.
Meanwhile, decent people are doing the right thing.
They are showing up.
They are volunteering.
They are donating millions of dollars (Taylor Swift alone donated $10 million). She is not alone in her generosity.
They are reaching out to family, friends, and neighbors with one, simple statement: How can I help?
Sure, there will be a time to look at what could have been done differently. Changes can happen.
But ugliness has no place here.
I loved reading that over 100 restaurants in Orange County, just south of us, donated 20% of sales last Tuesday to those affected by the fires.
I love seeing car after car of locals drive by the Pasadena Humane Society to drop off animal supplies and in some cases even foster a lost dog or cat.
I love seeing so many people give and give and give.
I love Los Angeles.
During awful tragedies like this, the kindness of others is wonderful to watch. Communities could do without the political banter.

Great post today, especially on this, the Nation’s last day as a recognized democracy. You’re not alone in recognizing this societal ugliness. LA Mag had an op-ed titled “The Erosion of Empathy: How Fake News and Conspiracies Divide Us.”
