Restaurant review: New Los Angeles sushi spot Tane Vegan Izakaya is a must-try!

We had friends coming into town for a night, and I wanted to find a nice place for dinner.

In a random online search, Tane Vegan Izakaya came up. I had never heard of them, so I did some research.

They are in Highland Park, only a few minutes from Donut Friend! They opened about five months ago. I decided to give them a try with our friends, as all of us love sushi.

I made a reservation and felt a little unwelcome. A lot of rules: time limit, if you cancel, needing my card upfront, don’t be late, etc. In hindsight, I think all of this is typical; it just came across as negative for my first experience switch them. I, of course, made the reservation anyway.

We arrived, and the hostess/server sat us. We spent a few minutes with the menu and ordered several appetizers/shareables. Then we started looking at the sushi rolls.

We started with Miso Soup, Roasted Beets Salad, Poke Salad, Katsu Caesar Salad, Crispy Cauli Bites (with three sauces), Garlic Edamame, and Loaded Potatoes. The salads were large, and all of the other dishes were enough for four to share and have a taste or two. Everything was delicious. I would say the Crispy Cauli Bites were my favorite, mainly because of the sauces.

For the sushi rolls, we ordered the Sweet Potato Roll, Manila Dune, Sunset, Leahi, and Point Reyes. I would order all of them again, and I’d say the Sunset was my favorite because of the nice spice addition.

One of the things I really liked about Tane Vegan Izakaya is that they had a separate menu for those who want an onion-free experience. Mike is allergic to onions, so this was perfect!

We all had a wonderful time and enjoyed everything we ordered.

The service was good, and our server kept our waters full, which is something I love. The restaurant was almost full.

I loved the atmosphere and the open kitchen, at least the sushi-making area.

Mike and I will definitely be back!

Highly recommend!
